School and Education
Assistive Technology (AT) or Electronic Assistive Technology (EAT) is not only for the home environment. It is now more widely found in the school, education and learning sector.
Life Skills brings the practical skills of ‘learning to be independent’ into the national curriculum. Making use of rooms designed to give context to the lessons, e.g. to look like a living room or kitchen.
Developing the skills to live independently includes social elements such as answering the phone and door, and starting a conversation. The interactive, educational settings give the students the opportunity to learn independent living in a safe and secure way. Using role plays for everyday situations makes learning much more fun.
Example of a Life Skill – role play ordering a pizza:
Evidence Based Life Skills: Use, using and making phone calls, initiating conversations, answering and opening a door
Equipment needed:
Environmental control system eg: evoassist or an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) Device eg: Tobii C15, Remoset Phone and Activ intercom, automatic door operator.
- make a phone call using the Remoset phone and either an environmental controller or AAC device to order a pizza of their choice,
- 5 minutes later the intercom buzzes,
- The students answer the intercom using their environmental control or AAC device,
- The students then decide if they are going to let the person in or not,
- If yes, they open the door again via their environmental control or AAC device and get their pizza.
Life skills and independent living centres give students confidence and knowledge as they grow and develop in to adults, having learnt these fundamental skills for life.
