Jason Liversage's world changed when he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND). Shortly after this he was diagnosed with Fabry's disease - a rare genetic condition that results in the body slowly being poisoned by a build-up of toxins. Even worse, there was also the realisation that his children, Lily and Poppy would also have it.
Jason's condition is gradual; it is slow to take effect, but could eventually cost him his ability to talk and the majority of his motor skills - as well as his freedom and independence. It also forced him to give up his job and has limited Jason to the home.
While Jason still had control and independence, he started taking precautions and measures to limit the impact of his condition, now and in the long term for him and his family.
After getting in touch with Steeper, an engineer visited the Liversage home, assessing Jason's needs and concerns, as well as his family's living requirements; finding a way to help Jason overcome his limitations as his condition progressed.
Steeper's Assistive Technology team installed a range of assistive technologies in Jason's home, to help him communicate, interact with and control his immediate environment, including an I-Series, environmental control systems, door openers, TV controls and intercoms.
The effect of this installation was dramatic and the remarkable transformation of his home is filmed on the BBC's home renovation programme - DIY SOS.
Mike Mortimer, Environmental Control (EC) Support Manager at Steeper says "Jason's home has been adapted to enable him to continue to live in his home as his condition changes. Equipment provided by Steeper and other partners involved in the project has made life easier for the family in difficult circumstances. Working on the project with the DIY SOS team and tradesmen of all disciplines was challenging, but extremely rewarding when the final results were seen."
The support and expertise from Steeper's team has helped to give Jason a peace of mind that, no matter how his condition develops, he'll always be able to communicate and carry on enjoying life with his family for many years to come.
